Who is the course for?
The SRC marine radio course is for anyone who owns a fixed or hand-held marine VHF radio.
What's it all about?
The Short Range Certificate is the minimum qualification required by law to operate a VHF radio fitted with Digital Selective Calling (DSC) on any British vessel. All new VHF radios are fitted with, or can be interfaced to DSC systems.
If you hold the 'old' VHF licence (pre 1999) you will need to upgrade your certificate to use a new set.
The course covers the basics of radio operation, correct frequencies, and procedures for distress, emergency and medical assistance. You'll cover ship to shore calls, Digital Selective Calling, Global Maritime Distress and Safety System, Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons and Search and Rescue.
The course will be taught using radio simulators and will be examined by a short written test.
